Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a first year STEAM teacher in a Title 1 school. We launched our STEAM program this year with minimal materials and budget. I am looking to provide more materials for my students to use. In STEAM class we create, collaborate, design, and build to solve problems and answer questions. Students work in teams of 2-4 to learn through hands-on inquiry. We are in great need of both quality and quantity of materials in order to provide opportunity for all my students.
In STEAM class, students explore engineering, science, and technology.
Art and math concepts are integrated in each investigation as students plan and sketch their blueprints, calculate needed materials and keep a budget. They learn valuable critical thinking skills as they work to meet challenge criteria. These experiences provide valuable life skills and build confidence.
Most of the students in my school are facing poverty, language barriers, and social and emotional challenges. They struggle in their general education classes. Special area classes, like STEAM, provide enrichment and a place where these students can thrive. I love it when my students realize they CAN solve problems, work together, and complete a challenge. These successes promote personal growth and a positive self-image; something my students greatly need and deserve. STEAM class helps my students to see their potential, learn important life skills, and fosters imagination and creativity. These skills will better prepare them for success in middle school, high school, and beyond.
