This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This past year, my students and I attempted to put together a poetry slam. While we were modestly successful, I can't help but think that next year we can do even better! With the right texts and resources, we can do just that. My students are extremely creative, yet they are somewhat self-conscious when asked to complete an assignment, such as writing a poem. They view poetry writing as an archaic, confusing form of literature, yet they are able to discuss and perform the latest rap songs with ease. I would like to tap into their extreme interest in hip-hop culture and link hip-hop to performance poetry. They will be able to express themselves creatively through the written word and by expressing themselves on the stage. They will be able to use rhythm and rhyme to vent their frustrations and teen angst. It is not often in the school system that these children get the chance to speak what is on their minds, and I feel that performance poetry is the perfect, safe vehicle in which they may do this. I am asking for some texts and resources that will help us in our quest to stage a poetry slam. I am also requesting a binding system so that we can publish our book of poetry and use the proceeds to help establish our poetry club. Your help is greatly appreciated. !
