I teach STEAM in a low-income, Title I school, where most of my students live in poverty. Despite their many obstacles to learning, these students are motivated to learn and excel when provided opportunities and materials to do so. I work hard to create diverse lessons that utilize both technology and hands-on activities to create meaningful learning experiences.
Unfortunately, my classroom budget is very limited and so my students don't have access to technology and materials readily available in more affluent schools.
As the STEAM teacher, I desire to provide every student in the school the means to explore science in new ways despite financial limitations or the myriad of challenges they face outside of school.
My Project
STEAM class gives students K-6 the opportunity to explore science in a hands on meaningful way. Each grade has a Science Standard about the atmosphere and space. Students are captivated by how the solar system moves and especially by man's connection to space. My students watched in awe as the Perseverance Rover landed on Mars. Now, in every class I have had students ask when we can build rockets.
My students want to take their learning about space travel to a whole new level by engineering and launching their own rockets!
It is not often that a teacher has students begging for the opportunity to learn and experience science. But that's what my students are doing. This is their project. This is their dream STEAM lesson.
I will give every student at my school the opportunity to design fins and a parachute for their own bottle rocket. I need a few pre-constructed models for them to use as they construct their own fins and parachutes from recycled materials. Thank you for helping my students launch their STEAM learning to a whole new level!
