My Students
I have been teaching kindergarten for 30 years in an amazing school, which is located in a low income community. Despite the often sad circumstances some of my students face, they are beating the odds every day. My students are bright, friendly, and extremely eager to learn new things. They love to explore and learn through play and hands-on experiences, which is the way it should be for a group of 5 and 6-year-olds.
With the current trend being all about test scores and less about letting kids be kids, I feel it is my duty to make learning as meaningful and engaging as I can for my students, while also making it fun!
My Project
Every year, my kindergarten students get such a kick out of listening to the Elephant and Piggie books by Mo Willems. I love to see them laughing and fully engaged during story read-aloud time. In the past, I have had to get these books from our school library when they were available.
Wouldn't it be amazing if we could have a set of these beloved Elephant and Piggie books right in our very own classroom?
My students and I would absolutely love it!
The best part of all is that my students learn so much about using speech bubbles, action marks, and punctuation marks without even realizing it. It warms my heart when they proudly show me that they have started using some of these things in their own writing and illustratons. It's a win-win for everyone!
