My Students
My students’ worlds have been turned upside down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I teach in a low-income, high poverty area. Our school is located in an urban neighborhood in New York City, and 85% of our students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch and breakfast, their daily source of nutrition. The school services many students who live in transient shelters. Eighteen percent of our students have special needs and receive special services. My students are finally based in the building.
These students are adjusting to life during a pandemic; they still need to wear masks daily in school.
Classes are closed during a COVID-19 outbreak. The road to recovery is social emotional learning and building academic skills while interacting with one another. My students need to rebuild relationships with others. They are mentally stressed. Our school population is comprised of general and special education students. The students are African American, Haitian, Latino, and Arabic.
My Project
After a time of learning loss due to the COVID-19 crisis, it is time to help our students become avid readers. I want to encourage them to put their laptops and devices aside and to pick up book after book. We can begin to create interested readers by offering comics and graphic novels in the classroom.
Reading a comical graphic novel will develop fluency, while encouraging students to dive into books for fun — the perfect recipe for a love of reading.
It is the road back to normal.
Books help children develop language and listening skills. Maya Angelou once said, “Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him.” Our goal is to provide our students with books to build a life long love of reading.
