About My Students

I have numerous students in my class this year that have issues with latitude and longitude. One of those students named Naeelah brought to my attention that I always mention the game Battleship but yet I don’t have the actual game for them to play with. Naeelah now says it's time we get some.

Naeelah is a great student who goes above and beyond but yet seeks out help in the areas she struggles with. She came up with this idea because she wants to help her classmates become better at coordinate skills that are an important part of her 7th grade geography class this year. My goal for all of my students is to have them develop the skills and knowledge of geography and for the students to then be as independent as possible after they leave my class and continue on into high school and beyond. Naeelah came to me and said that she wished I would bring in a copy of the game I was talking about, because she said I mentioned it so often in class with latitude and longitude. She asked me the other day to get some games, and I agreed with her 100%, but I told her it would be with her help.

As I am teaching and the students are working and they don't always understand the work. I usually have to use videos or pictures to them, which works against our goal of independence. I immediately started brainstorming what Naeelah told me about getting these board games into our classroom. Together we came up with the idea to let her lead this project to get the games for our classroom. She wanted to make sure that there were enough for everyone in the class to use as well as ones students could sign out and take home. Through this project my students will become more independent learners as they learn to better understand coordinate skills and the ideas of latitude and longitude. We live in a world powered by technology and it is important to sometimes step away from that and allow students to be more hands on. I think having these games in the room and having them available to take home will be especially beneficial for my students who have a hard time and will make studying fun.

In Their Own Words

Our goal is to get enough Battleship games to help us to learn more independently and be more confident as we move forward in class. We need to learn how to use coordinates to find locations we are discussing in class and understand it so we can us it all day. We need to learn how to use the games like our teacher told us about and use them to better help us learn. We need the games to help us with that understanding that we still have problems with.

I have pretty good grades, where some of my other classmates don’t. If we have access to these games, I will be able to learn from my teacher that I can then show my friends how to use and how it can help them better get latitude and longitude. I have board games at home and see how it helps my little brother learn information. I think Battleship will do the same by helping us to better understand the idea and have fun too.

This project is important to my school and me because this is something I think we need in our class right now, because it will help us the rest of the year as we continue to learn geography. If we get the games, we will be able to practice and help my other classmates to understand coordinates and hopefully help bring their grades up. My friends and I can work together to help each other understand; it will be fun to help other classmates know how to better understand latitude and longitude too.
