Latinx Author for Urban High Schoolers

My Students

This project will benefit approximately 150, 11th grade English students in my diverse, urban classroom. Coming from all cultures and walks of life, they are curious, lively, smart and unbelievably motivated. Students enrolled in this class vary from reading and processing at college levels, to still learning the English language and needing a lot of comprehension support, to those with special needs. This class teaches them how to analyze, reason and then write about it. We practice critical reading, thinking and discussion and it is amazing to see how students open up, discover how smart they are and learn how to express themselves intellectually. Literature teaches history, human thought and reasoning and exposes them to different perspectives and ways of life. They love it. I do too.

My Project

Benjamin Alire Saenz is an author my students need to read. I have 160 students enrolled for English 11 and am 40 books short. Please help me bridge this gap in basic learning materials. We are remote learning and each student will pick up a copy of their won, if this quest is successful. "Aristotle and Dante" will expose them to a great, Latinx author who writes about friendship and the need to bend in order to keep people in one's life. My diverse students (more than half students of color), need to experience authors that reflect their cultures and skin color. Saenz has a written a thought-provoking, discussion worthy book that will help my students engage, thing critically and write. It's not a glamorous project, but it's about books and literary. We don't have essential supplies to teach. Books are what we need.

I hope to pair this book with discussions about tolerance, gender and sexuality.
