Latino Literature - Books That Reflect Who We Are

My students need books in Spanish with Hispanic/Latino characters that they can relate to.

My Students

I teach Spanish for Spanish Speakers at a low-income school in Northern California. Most of my students either grew up speaking Spanish at home or attended the local Dual-Immersion School during grades K-8.

My students are proud to be bilingual and work hard to maintain proficiency in both English and Spanish.

While our high school has traditionally offered a Spanish for Spanish-Speakers course, last year our department realized the need to revamp the curriculum to better address the varying needs of our Spanish speaking students. This year, our Spanish-Speaker courses have tripled!

I have an amazing group of about eighty Latino students. I am looking forward to working with them to not only improve their academic Spanish, but also show them how being bilingual will benefit them in the future.

My Project

In order to engage my students in reading, they need books that reflect who they are.

I am trying to build a library of books in Spanish, that my students can relate to. They need books that are not only accessible based on their level of Spanish, but also entertaining and engaging. Some requested titles include

Cajas de Carton: Relatos de la Vida Peregrina de un Nino Campesino, El Alquimista: Una Fabula Para Seguir Tus Suenos, Pedro Paramo, Como agua para chocolate, La Casa en Mango Street, and ¿Quién fue Pablo Picasso?

I want my students to fall in love with reading, and emphasize their pride in who they are. By providing Spanish language books to my students, they will be able to improve reading proficiency, build academic vocabulary, and learn about other cultures. I plan on encouraging students to read by allowing them to borrow books from the library for book reports and discussions.
