Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 4 sections of Middle School ELA/Social Studies with an average of 25-30 students per section. These students have a passion of excelling and a deep interest in issues of social justice and global citizenship.

Our classroom community is racially and linguistically diverse with about 70% my students coming for a Latino background and 30% from an African American background.

About 40% of my students are ELLs and I have about 20 students with IEPs. One of my sections is co-taught with a SPED teacher.

My students are adventurous young people with a thirst for knowledge and a constant drive for self improvement. Each of them is gifted in unique ways and they are currently developing themselves as readers, writers, and citizens of the world.

My Project

It is vitally important to my students that they are exposed to both history and literature that is reflective of, and written by people of their own cultures. As such, I am super excited to be rolling out my school's first unit on Latinx culture and history!

I have already begun looking at non-fictions texts comprised of both primary and secondary sources that will be used as support scaffolding for the historical component of this unit, but a literary text is still needed!!

In my classroom I work to integrate the reading of both literary and non-fiction texts, as the two do not authentically exist independently of one another.

"The House on Mango Street" by Sandra Cisneros is a treasured classic that I remember reading as a student. It is accessible in its language and character snapshots, yet complex in its style and depth. "The House on Mango Street" is the perfect text to support my students' learning and development of cultural competence. Thank you so much for your generous support.
