It is vitally important to my students that they are exposed to both history and literature that is reflective of, and written by people of their own cultures. As such, I am super excited to be rolling out my school's first unit on Latinx culture and history! I have already begun looking at non-fictions texts comprised of both primary and secondary sources that will be used as support scaffolding for the historical component of this unit, but a literary text is still needed!! In my classroom I work to integrate the reading of both literary and non-fiction texts, as the two do not authentically exist independently of one another. "The House on Mango Street" by Sandra Cisneros is a treasured classic that I remember reading as a student. It is accessible in its language and character snapshots, yet complex in its style and depth. "The House on Mango Street" is the perfect text to support my students' learning and development of cultural competence. Thank you so much for your generous support.
