Being able to give students choices such as laying down, bouncing, standing, and being able to fidget without causing distractions in a flexible seating classroom would be beneficial to students' attentiveness, as well as encouraging regular student attendance, punctuality, and encouraging positive behavior. I teach at a Title I school, with students from many academic, social, and economic backgrounds. Attendance and attentiveness are big concerns for our students.
Providing students with opportunities to discover multiple seating arrangements in the classroom will benefit them in discovering ways in which they can successfully study at home.
Flexible seating will encourage more student responsibility in order to keep up with belongings and use flexible seating properly. Research has shown that children learn better when they are moving. It also provides more exercise and opportunities to burn calories. More and more students seem to be "movers" or "fidgeters," and I believe that having more outlets for students' energy will help with their attentiveness and retention of knowledge. When students are more comfortable, they are better able to focus. Allowing more movement through flexible seating will allow students to be more engaged, making class time seem to go by more quickly for them.
Ripple and Donorschoose.org graciously fulfilled my wish for my students to have flexible seating through the Best Day Ever campaign. We are receiving floor rocking chairs, exercise balls, wobble stools, fidget bands, and a couple other items. To allow all students enough different seating choices, we need one more option. A set of stools is the perfect option! We also need a set of numbered sit spots for whole group instruction, and a Swiffer in order to keep our floor areas clean and safe to use. Another amazing donor purchased a set of 30 magnetic whiteboard clipboards for our class to use for flexible seating. We are in need of a class set of markers and erasers to use with them. I will be purchasing lap desks for students sitting on the floor to use. Please help us finish our project so students can use everything to the fullest extent before the end of the school year!
