My Students

I teach 20 kindergarten age students who love school! Most of my students come from low to middle-income homes, and with cuts to funding, there is not money in our budgets for anything outside of basic supplies. I strive to give them the loving supportive environment that they deserve while they are in my care so they can have the best chance at growing, learning, loving, and just being a kid with no worries!

Kindergarten is such an important developmental period in children's lives, and developmentally appropriate practices of movement, play, and choice are often being swept under the rug with the increasing academic demands being placed on our students.

However, research actually supports that using these practices increases student learning, growth, and achievement! Therefore, it is important to me to give my ALL to my kinders' growing minds, no matter where they come from or how different they are; a place where they have the best chance at flourishing and developing into great learners and people!

My Project

This year our number of students has increased, which means that I have a need for more flexible seating options and pocket charts that the students can use during their station time. Flexible seating allows children the opportunity to choose where they sit and complete their work. Children do not all learn the same way and this allows me to differentiate their learning for them.

Flexible seating allows students the ability to create their own seated spaces.

Sometimes they find a little niche I never thought of or pull seating together to make their own spot for reading or working. The floor is such a popular choice, as I'm sure with any kindergarten classroom.

My goal is to have enough flexible seating options for each student to have something and, with an increase in students, I am needing one more Runtz ball chair and two more wobble cushions.

I am also requesting two pocket charts for our station time. Due to an increase of in my number of students, I will need to have more stations going on at one time, meaning, I will need resources to make our stations run smoothly and allow the children to be independent learners. The students will use these pocket charts to sort cards based on a variety of skills, read sentences and poems, build words, sequence stories, complete addition and subtraction problems, and much, much more.
