My Project

The major source of Earth's energy is electromagnetic radiation from the sun. When we study light we study measurable characteristics of light such as wavelength, frequency and wave speed, as well as the behavior of light in a variety of environmental conditions.

The red and green lasers will be used several different lab investigations around the nature and behavior of light.

The lasers will be used to experimentally determine the index of refraction of water, acrylic and vegetable oil. The use of two different colors of lasers in our investigation of diffraction will enable students to see how changing wavelengths impacts the interference patterns we see as well as slit width, slit spacing and distance from the screen.

The availability of different wavelengths of coherent light sources provides student an additional possible variable to test in their own inquiry projects they conduct at the conclusion of the optics unit. For example, a past student wanted to study the behavior of light in different types of atmospheric conditions such as smog vs fog. The availability of red and green lasers would have given them another variable to investigate.
