I am a kindergarten teacher at Florida Avenue Elementary School, in Slidell, LA. I teach 18 low socio-economic students. We are a Title I school with limited resources. Most of my students receive free or reduced lunch. I am very fortunate to have a multicultural class. I have three Hispanic students, one Chinese student, five African-American students and nine Caucasians. Hurricane Katrina heavily impacted our school. Due to Hurricane Katrina, we are now sharing our school with another school that was destroyed. Many of my students are now living in FEMA trailers. The resources that our school enjoyed before the hurricane were stripped away from us. There are also many things that we have always wished for that may never become a reality, due to the hurricane. For these reasons, I write this proposal. Many of my students have lost all of their toys and other joys that most children take for granted. Books are no exception. The only books many of the students have access to are those in the classroom. Books are very important to young children. It opens their minds to the world. My students love me to read stories to them. I read on an average of three to four storybooks daily. But, I have a problem with students saying they cannot see the pictures in the books. The books are not very large so they all want to sit on the front row. The students have to take turns sitting up front. To have all the students see the pictures as well as listen to the story would be a dream come true. What I would love to have for my class is a Digital Visual Presenter, such as an ELMO. With a digital visual presenter, we would no longer have the problem of students who cannot see the pictures in the book. Every story that I read to my students would be projected on the wall so that all students would not only hear the story, but also have a true visual as to what the pictures are representing. I know this is a tall order, but it would make a difference in the lives of some very broken children. I think a Digital Visual Presenter would make the stories "larger than life" for my students. This would be something positive in a very negative situation that they live through on a daily basis. Thank you for considering my proposal.
