Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A 21st Century work environment invites students also to invest in their learning. I teach 9th Grade Marine Science to urban students in a small public inner city school. The school focuses on design education and college preparation. We attract students from all over the city, most of whom are eligible for free lunch. My course is aimed at preparing all of our incoming students to transition from middle-level to high school science. It is interdisciplinary and skills-based in nature, and helps students to weave together a mixture of ocean-related science ideas. Making real-world connections is often difficult for students and doing hands-on investigations in a 21st Century science learning environment enables this kind of thinking.
My classroom is really beginning to come alive. Donors like you have helped me to secure items like fish tanks and preserved marine specimens. There is no shortage of interesting things to look at when students walk in the room. While my students use computers and digital devices outside of school, they cannot access information and technology in school! The traditional science classroom is becoming increasingly irrelevant. How can I help my students to develop into information literate young adults if we don’t have computers in the classroom?
I'm requesting 6 netbook computers with extended warranties, mice and extra power adapters in order to set up a computer station in my classroom. By doing this I'm proposing something radical: using computers in the classroom to help my students wade through the ever-deepening ocean of information. I want to tell the following story to my students' parents - Instead of performing hands-on science investigations in isolation, your children will do background research online. Your children will present their scientific findings via PowerPoint. Your children will seek out answers to their own science questions. Your children will learn to distinguish among sources for credibility. Your children will Tweet and respond to each other’s ideas in class. In short, your children will develop the skills they need in order to succeed in college and the workplace.
It's been said that "if you can motivate students, you can teach them anything." Your donation will help to transform our classroom into the kind of professional, motivating, 21st century science learning environment my students deserve.
