Laptops for Future Biologist!

My students need additional laptops because they access their textbooks and other classroom resources on them and I have only 25 laptops for 35 students in a class.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Morley's classroom raised $1,937

My Students

My students come from an underprivileged neighborhood in Chicago. They are mostly African American. They lack certain resources at their school because of budget cuts from the public school system. They mostly live in low income housing apartments that are small for families. The students spend a lot of their time out of school at the local public park that is also under funded because of budget cuts.

If given the opportunity and the resources my students deserve they will use it to advance their academic skills and to explore further avenues that are currently not available to them.

Most of my students are hungry for knowledge. I want to make sure they have the best opportunities to explore as many things possible to develop their knowledge further.

My Project

Currently I have 25 laptops that stay in my classroom. We do not have textbooks for the students in my Science classes. The students are required to use the laptops to access a .pdf version of the textbook that I have acquired for them. In one of my classes I have 35 students. Therefore, I have 10 students that are not able to access the textbook and are required to share a laptop with another student to do so.

My students need and deserve these laptops and my school can't afford them!

In addition to using the computer to access the textbooks, I use other platforms on the internet to promote a better and more progressive learning environment. An example of this is Google classroom. On this website I have students join a classroom where I am able to post and collect assignments online from them. I am also able to edit their work and converse in real time over the internet with them on this platform. It is very useful and beneficial for both the students and me as a teacher.

Over the course of the year we do many projects that require a lot of research. There is no computer lab in my school and many students do not have computers at home, so they need the computers in my classroom for their research. They also need word or google docs, and power point or google slides to write papers and present their research and lab reports. An example of one of the projects we have coming up is "The Invasive Species Project". Students research about invasive species and the effects they have on a given ecosystem. I need more computers so that all of my students can work on this in my classroom. Please help.
