My students need a laptop, speakers, and a printer to conduct research, obtain visuals, and access multimedia links that will bring learning to life and will use technology.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever spent 10 minutes waiting for a computer to turn on? Did you then wait an additional 15 minutes for anything to load? We waste precious instructional minutes because we do not have computers that are capable of loading websites or programs that help students use technology as a resource.
I teach an energetic group of 6th grade students in an urban elementary school.
Our school is located in an area where most students come from low-income homes. We are a Title 1 school, meaning our students are labeled as economically disadvantaged. Most of my students have not been able to reach proficient levels according to grade level standards. They are a group who enjoys interactive learning and they become engaged during lessons with activities involving technology. Many of my students do not have computers in their homes and internet access would be a luxury that many can not afford. Unfortunately, our school can not afford to purchase new technology for our classroom, either due to limited funding and budget cuts. We don't have a computer lab at our school so it is very difficult to give students the opportunity to use computers frequently. Without these resources in the classroom, it is very difficult for my students to complete many assignments requiring research.
My Project
Acquiring a laptop and printer for the classroom will improve learning in many ways. We will be able to access educational websites that allow us to link to multimedia videos or slideshows that enhance student learning. Students will be able to use the resources in a center for assignments that require research and expository writing assignments. Student work will be printed for display and for use of visuals when working on presentations. It has also proven to be highly effective for my students to retain information when I show science and social studies videos and movies that correlate with our grade level standards. The speakers would assist during these activities. There has also been talk that the next state testing phase will possibly be administering tests through computers, therefore it is important that we expose our students to a highly engaging learning tool that is now a very important part of everyday life.
Donating to this project will assist our class in many learning activities.
Our students will have tools that are necessary for the research assignments they are required to complete. Students become much more enthusiastic when working on computers to improve skills. They also enjoy interactive activities that we engage in as a whole class, using websites that require current and updated software. The laptop, printer, and speakers will benefit all students in our classroom in various ways.
