My Students

My kids are brilliant, inquisitive children, many of whom live in the nearby housing projects and homeless shelters. Their parents work extremely long hours to provide for their children, but many of my students come from homes where English is not the primary language. My students work very hard, and that hard work pays off: many of them attend some of the best high schools in New York City!

My children never cease to amaze me.

When describing the relationship between two characters in a fictional text, one student said, "Oh, you mean they have a symbiotic relationship?" Symbiotic relationship? I was floored. It was - once again - an example of how my students teach one another, and me, as much as I teach them.

My Project

Technology has been a fantastic tool that helps my diverse learners. I have been teaching long enough to remember a time when computers and headphones were not readily available or widely used. Introducing technology into my classroom, I am able to help students of many different learning levels and styles.

Laptops allow my students to access a wide-range of information and educational platforms, and headphones make language and ideas accessible for students who need auditory support.

Many of my students are children who are still learning English and need to hear how words are pronounced as they read the words in a book or online. Other students better understand content and ideas by both reading the information online as well as listening to the explanations.

Colorful cardstock provides beautiful displays for my students' work as well as for concepts that we are learning. I strive to make our learning environment as cheerful and welcoming as possible, and multi-color cardstock helps with creating the desired effects!
