My students need to access lesson content through a SmartBoard. We need a compatible laptop so lessons can be more interactive and visual for English Language Learners.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Sierra's classroom raised $513

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
What you would see if you were to walk into our room right now: a Wigwam diagram, various hovercrafts made out of household materials, a Word Wall with a collection of homophones, , and a yoga posture called "Desk puppy." Sadly, you would also see an inactive SmartBoard. Help us get it working!
I have a Dual Language classroom comprised of 30 nine and ten year olds.
All of my students are bilingual and we are currently writing fictional narratives in Spanish. Some students are farther along than others in their writing of scenes and development of characters/plot. Because they are all in different stages of the drafting process, it would be ideal for them to be able to go back and reference my previous lessons as needed. A SmartBoard presentation facilitates re-visiting slides that were used to illustrate a previous lesson. This is differentiation at its best---meeting a student where they are at to move them forward to the next step. We need this computer to bring our SmartBoard and projector to life.
My Project
In our place value unit in math, my 4th graders are currently working on expanded notation. One of my students wrote that 126,300 = 1,000+2,000+6,000+300. Immediately what popped into my head was that this student needed to SEE the layering of 100,000+20,000 and so on. I envisioned how it would look on the SmartBoard with each place value as a different color. I pictured inviting him up to the board to layer them himself, one on top of the other until he had made his number. Sadly, I couldn't bring that visual to life for him because our SmartBoard and projector sit idle in our room waiting a compatible laptop.
If this project gets funded, the SmartBoard will be in use every day to make lessons/content material more interactive and visual. The board will be used to facilitate transitions between content areas, build presentations across an entire unit so that previous lessons can be referenced (helpful in writing), and watch videos to enhance science content.
The SmartBoard in our 4th grade classroom is one of just two in the entire school.
As a SmartBoard certified trainer, I plan to model for administration the difference this tool can make in two areas in the hopes that future grant funds will be allocated to putting Smartboards in every classroom. 1. The SmartBoard is useful for archiving of teacher-created material to avoid "reinventing the wheel." 2. Making lessons more visual which research shows is best practice for teaching ELLs.
