Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every day we start with Good News for each class. Students can share their good news with other students and myself. We then begin to dive into the engineering project that we are working on. All students should be My favorite quote or saying to the students is "Figure it out, you can do it"
My students are mostly first and second generation immigrants of Hispanic and Jamaican decent.
Others are refugees from war torn villages near Nepal and from Albania. 35 percent of my students are English language learners and 25 percent qualify for Special Education Services. 100 percent of my students qualify for the free lunch program. We are an inner city themed high school in the Northeast.
What I like about many of my students is that many are eager to learn and they want to do their best. Other students are struggling and it is difficult to motivate and engage them without use of technology like the requested laptop.
My Project
My current classroom laptop is 8 years old and can is no longer functioning properly. It cannot load and run engineering software applications and the video driver will not run DVDs. The operating system is old and outdated. We also need the laptop so that students can present their Multimedia Presentations and for me to demonstrate how certain software applications work like Westpoint Bridge builder, RobotC Virtual Academy, Autodesk Inventor, and RobotC programming software. Students will be able to learn these programs by watching me demonstrate and then they will apply what they learned to the challenge presented to them. Students will also be able to practice their presentation skills to the rest of the class using applications like PowerPoint.
Donations to this project will allow me to update the use of technology in my classroom.
My eight year old computer has trouble even turning on in the morning. My students lack opportunity for experiential learning. This laptop will greatly enhance my classroom by allowing me to demonstrate sophisticated applications and for the students to present their projects to their peers. We will also be able to download and view videos of educational and curricular relevance.
