Unfortunately, the majority of my students do not have access to technology at home. With many of them aiming high with passionate aspirations of attending college and earning degrees, I believe access and exposure to technology is essential to their success, something we all want for our students.
I am a Speech Teacher with students from low socio-economic backgrounds ages 13-21 in a special education High School.
My students in particular are Standard Assessment Special Needs students. What this means is that while they attend a Special Education School they are required to take Regents and other State tests and have the opportunity to earn a Regents diploma and attend college. They are labeled as learning disabled, students with autism or emotionally disturbed, but they are so much more than their identifications. Although they are often misunderstood by those around them, I have gotten to know them and I believe that I am lucky to have been able to do so. I am inspired by my students everyday. Many of them have such passionate aspirations. Some want to be journalists or architects, others cartoonists, authors or teachers. I want nothing more for them than to see them succeed and I believe access to a laptop could truly aid in their journey to achieving that success
My Project
As a Speech and Language therapist in a high school setting, many of my students' goals focus on improving their writing and reading skills. I truly believe this laptop would greatly aid in their intervention and eventual success as high school graduates. As many of them hope to attend college, trade school and/or enter the workforce, I would utilize this laptop to help them write their college essays, compile resumes and work on their general essay writing skills. As I work with most of my students in an individual or small group setting they would all have equal opportunity to learn hands-on skills that are vital in our technology-focused world. It would also give them the opportunity to practice their typing skills as well. My students have so much to say and so very much to offer. I want the world to see them the way I see them, as promising, inspiring and hard-working young men and women, that if given the right chances and opportunities, could truly make a difference in our world.
I know my students would benefit greatly from your hopeful donations to this project.
Many come from low-socioeconomic households and have shared with me the difficulties they have overcome and/or continue to face on a day-to-day basis. Many of their stories have truly left me heartbroken but have also motivated me to make their learning experience that more enriching and beneficial to their futures. I want to reduce the obstacles and greatly increase their chances of achieving their dreams.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
