Laptop for 3D Printed Prosthetic Limbs for Students(High-needs Special Ed)
My students need an Acer laptop to power our 3D printer so we can print 3D printed prosthetic hands for children born without hands!
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Kamer's classroom raised $846

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Within the NYC Public school system is District 75. District 75 houses the highest needs special needs students and oftentimes, these students also fall into the highest needs economically disadvantaged category. Over 90% of my students fall into this category. We are a 12-month program, where students attend year-round to receive services.
My students are part of the largest school district in the country (the NYC DOE) and fall into the highest needs category.
For years, I have poured my own money into my classroom, but it is not enough! I have reached out to local community members and collected used and refurbished computers, but they do not meet the requirements to run modern software.
I teach grades K-8 and a total of 9 classes, a daily lunch club and a weekly positive behavior intervention club as a reward for students. All students would have access to these resources! That is why today, I am reaching out for global support to help our highest needs students get an equal chance to succeed! We truly need your assistance to level the playing field. Many students come from homes that do not have Internet access or technology, further increasing the achievement gap.
My Project
Recently, my students and I received a 3D printer through generous donors who believed in our mission: to construct 3D-printed prosthetic limbs for children born without hands. We initially had a single printer, but after much experimentation, we decided to return it to purchase a different model. We then upgraded the new model by printing 3D printed parts in conjunction with store-bought hardware. Today, we have a few printers that are almost capable of printing prosthetic limbs for children in need. We keep tinkering with the settings, filament and hardware to achieve the best results.
We still need laptops to connect to each printer that are strong enough to be the brain of each printer because without a computer connected to each printer, their capabilities are severely limited.
We are first trying to get one laptop.
My students and I will be presenting at the District 75 STEM Fair, aboard the Intrepid, in June and I will be conducting a workshop at the "#NYCSchoolsTech Summit" in July this summer, to show educators how to incorporate this technology to change lives! Your donation will not just go towards my students and my classroom, it will go towards educating hundreds of educators and students throughout the city!
If you look back at our past projects, you can see some of the amazing work we have accomplished! The kicker to this project is: the students being served and the students creating these limbs are students with multiple severe disabilities. This is an opportunity to put students at the helm of a project that is both meaningful and allows them to grow empathy. Imagine a child building a prosthetic hand for another child their own age. I cannot imagine anything more life-changing or impactful! With your support, we can make this goal a reality!
