Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in a school with high need students. They are predominantly black and brown and were hit the hardest when COVID-19 ravaged New York City, especially their communities. Many of their families were torn apart by hospitalization, death, and unemployment. Their sense of security was completely shattered when they were barred from the one place where they could always count on to receive emotional support, food, and the tools needed to advance their learning.

While the majority of my students received a learning device and internet access, I am using an old MacBook Air computer that is on life support.

It overheats when left on for an extended amount of time, it takes a while for programs to start, and I must remain connected to a power outlet during live teaching to stay connected. Budget cuts resulting from COVID-19 make investing in a new one for next year very unlikely.

My Project

I am hoping that a new computer and a connector will serve two purposes. The first purpose is to make interacting with my students on Google Classroom quicker and easier whether it be online or at least 6 feet away. They need a lot of supports so the sooner I can appear, create, or post material when they ask, the better. A fully working computer is essential for the most effective type of teaching struggling students online: 1-1 live tutoring and displaying samples.

The second purpose of a new computer is to make this old computer (if it still works) available to a student in need during in-person learning.

It is becoming clear that Google Classroom will remain our friend until a vaccine for COVID-19 becomes available. Teachers and students will use it for both remote learning and in-person learning to reduce the need for close contact, the sharing of books, and the exchange of papers. Having a computer available in the class will allow anyone who forgets a computer at home to participate in learning.
