This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My second-grade students are 45 boys and girls who come to school each day eager to learn. The kids are sweet and kind souls who are trying their best to succeed academically — yet, it is often a struggle. My classroom population is roughly 50% English language learners and 50% African-American students. Our school population is primarily African-American and Hispanic, and at our school, 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.

Despite being economically challenged, these kids are true go-getters and lovers of learning.

They embrace everything I am teaching them. They love school and thirst for knowledge. School is a safe haven for many of my students.

My Project

I teach in a year-round school and the students start back on July 19th so time is of the essence. I want to add bits and pieces of flexible seating to my classroom. I have a few floor cushions and bouncy bands. Now we need more.

While working in class completing their math and science projects, the kids want to scatter and sit in different places so I am requesting 8 lap trays and 6 in your seat wiggle cushions to help make these choices a reality.

While these items are small in nature, I believe they will have a big impact on my classroom learning environment. I know that I myself have been in meetings and got so tired of sitting that I would move to the back and stand by the wall. Imagine 7-8 years olds sitting on a daily basis for 7 hours a day. Torture. With your help, I can make this happen for my kids.
