My students are a group of creative, imaginative, and active children. They all receive speech and language therapy due to a deficit in various areas including speaking/listening, reading/writing, and social skills. Many of my students are also first generation Asian Americans coming from low-income immigrant families.
Imagine not being able to successfully express all of your wants and needs or understand directions given to you.
Now, imagine those struggles in an environment where your teacher doesn't speak your language. These are the struggles that my students who receive speech and language services, and who are also English Language Learners, face on a daily basis. Many of my students come from immigrant families who value education greatly. However, many of these students are raised by grandparents, as their parents work long hours, in order to provide for them. Therefore, many students have had limited language experiences, such as going to the library or having bedtime stories read to them.
Being a first-generation American from an immigrant family myself, I understand the struggles they experience. I have been blessed with the opportunity to give these children the best, and I have no intentions of giving anything less.
My Project
Many of my students are first-generation Asian American students from low-income immigrant families. All of my students also have speech and language impairments that impact their ability to express themselves. Therefore, one strategy we use frequently in speech therapy is to draw what they are thinking about. They often love to draw about their families and activities they do over the weekend, which is something surprisingly difficult to find in books in their curriculum.
In a world where my students do not see themselves in books and struggle with expressing their thoughts and feelings, artistic expression allows them to create their own illustrations and feel understood.
My students love arts and crafts activities to express themselves, and these materials will allow them to better do so.
