My Project
My speech-language therapy students are their best selves and the most successful communicators when they are fully regulated and engaged. The best way I've seen to accomplish this is by allowing my students to move while they are learning and communicating. This is especially true for my students who are nonspeaking or minimally speaking.
Moving our bodies in ways that are fun and regulating opens the door for practicing a variety of language skills.
Using hands-on toys and tools and providing opportunities for movement during speech sessions helps my students be motivated to communicate.
Some of my favorite phrases to teach students include, "Ready set go!" "Let's do it again!" "This is fun!" and "I'm all done." Items like the spinning chair, the spinning tops, the wobble board, and the stepping stones all provide the perfect opportunities to incorporate that kind of language. We use a variety of language modalities including speech, picture symbols, signs, and high-tech AAC devices to practice making requests, sharing opinions and preferences, advocating and setting boundaries, and participating in activities of shared joy.
