Language Literacy List for My 1st Graders and ELL Learners.
Help me give my students who are learning English, tools to help them learn including various picture/vocabulary cards, and an English Language Development Listening Center plus many hands-on phonics puzzles, games and learning activities.
My class is a sweet mix of students on various ability levels, and nationalities who are curious and eager to learn. My students are motivated to learn and are very interested in everything.
However, the pandemic was difficult because many did not attend in-person school last year, or had many absences because of it, and fell behind academically.
I am hoping using these learning resources will help them catch up to grade level reading, writing, and math...especially those whom English is their second language.
I would love to support my student's academic growth through purchasing effective learning tools that will help them make significant progress towards mastery in the skills they struggle with, and have fun doing it!
My Project
I have a new student who recently came from Venezuela. This student does not understand English at all. The picture resources are for this student, and my other ELL's, so that I can talk to them while pointing to a picture, thereby helping the student understand and learn English by visual & auditory representation. Using pictures will help my ELL students feel more included in discussions, and identify feelings and ideas with the Social-Emotional Card Set. (feelings)
I chose visual resources for my ELL students, phonics activities for my struggling readers, and language skills for my high readers and writers so that my whole class can benefit academically from these valuable resources.
Just as the picture cards are a valuable resource for my ELL students, my struggling readers will benefit from the phonics activities to learn to read. These games and activities will also encourage students to come because it is fun to learn to read and write at school! I have tried to choose activities that students could use in a center, that are hands-on, are mostly self-correcting, and also have the most learning potential.
There are some resources for the whole class to use together. The math tools will make it easier for me to explain base 10 math concept to my students on the white board, and the magnetic white board, that sticks onto a white board, has guide lines on it, so I can teach the students how to write correctly on the blue and red lines. (something that is very difficult for students to do in 1st grade.) It will help me model writing on the lines, without having to draw them on the white board myself, and the students can practice on it, too, when we play, "Share the Pen" altogether!
