Learning a new language is difficult. All of my students are English language learners and work hard every day to speak, listen, read, and write English. They can easily become frustrated and overwhelmed. With a laptop, my students would be able to interact with language in a new, engaging way.
My students are all English language learners (ELL).
They range in age from five to twelve years old. They come from homes where they do not have access to technology and all participate in our free lunch program. My students are very motivated and eager to learn English and want to show their classmates and teachers that they are very capable and smart. Oftentimes, my students are overwhelmed with all of the English around them. They want to do their best to speak and read English fluently, but they need time and exposure to relevant and meaningful opportunities to best learn English. I want to do whatever I can to make my students successful while providing them opportunities to learn in the 21st century.
My Project
A laptop would change my students' language learning experience. A laptop would provide my students with a hands-on experience to learning English, literacy skills, and important technology concepts. My students would be able to access various websites, online books, phonics activities, and other listening activities. These different activities would give me the chance to tailor learning objectives and needs to each individual student. My beginner ELL students would be able to practice basic vocabulary and letter and number concepts. My more advanced students could listen to online books read to them by native English speakers and practice reading the books themselves. They could also use the laptop to type different stories and publish them for others to read and enjoy. They could send emails and use the built in webcam to have online conversations with our pen pals around the world. The laptop would give my students many new experiences!
Having a laptop in our classroom would allow my students to have the opportunity to interact with English and technology on a daily basis.
Right now we share a computer lab with 315 other students and do not get the chance to use the computers often. Having our own laptop would allow my students to have constant access to engaging activities that would promote learning language and literacy skills. My students need this relevant, high-tech tool in our classroom to stay engaged in learning.
