Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach beginning Spanish to a wide range of students. Some have never before interacted with a monolingual Spanish speaker, while others speak the language at home or with grandparents. Some are high achievers, while others have diagnosed learning disabilities and struggle with academics. All students are required to take two years of a foreign language, regardless of ability or background.

To meet such a wide range of needs, I keep the content highly contextualized.

I like to show videos of a wide variety of Spanish-speaking countries with a focus on music, art, daily life, and festivals. The images grab their attention, but reading is truly the best way to boost their language skills, and I have only outdated textbooks. I want my students to have access to culturally rich, comprehensible stories for their reading pleasure. I’d like to read at least one novel in level one and two or more at level two. Ideally, I would like to share these novels with colleagues to provide an even greater amount of literature to begin preparing them for the AP test from year one.

My Project

Students in second-year Spanish are tasked with mastering the use of the past tense. What better way to do that than with a compelling read about a historical sports figure from a time with direct relevance to today's social issues?

The struggle of an aspiring baseball player fighting his way to the Major Leagues in the era of Jim Crow laws will capture the attention of sports fanatics and history buffs alike.

This early Spanish reader is written with just 150 unique words, providing the repetition that students need to acquire target vocabulary and sentence structure, all while engaging them in a personal story.
