"Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same things, but learning another way to think about things."
-Flora Lewis.
Students in my classroom students gain an introduction to foreign language and with that they are learning how to become a successful learner.
My 8th graders come from various backgrounds in our rural Montana school.
We are a Title I school with many disadvantaged students and a large percentage on the free and reduced lunch program. The 8th grade year is one of changes and transitions for students as they are not yet in high school but no longer relate to younger students. The social aspects of school are becoming more and more important and the gap between those who are successful and those who struggle academically is becoming more apparent. Living in a very homogeneous area, many of my students have not had the opportunity to travel and experience the diversity that exists in the world. My class provides these students with their first taste of foreign language learning and some exposure to the world beyond our classroom walls.
My Project
Connecting learning to real life and making the activities done in class relevant to students lives is the goal of teaching. A subscription to an ability appropriate magazine will help students use their target language while keeping up on the latest news both here in the U.S. and abroad. In addition, sound phones will make it possible for us to focus on our speaking abilities and pronunciation. These phones allow students to hear themselves and will reveal errors in student pronunciation.
All students learn differently and not all students are able to see the value in education.
Providing diverse materials and many different medium for learning will help to make connections with all students and all types of learners.
