My English Language Learner students have great curiosity and interest in demonstrating their knowledge, skills and ideas. Students have arrived in the US in the last 2 years and show great enthusiasm while navigating a new educational system and, in some cases, recovering from the trauma that motivated their families to relocate. There are 9 different languages being used to gain understanding and develop community. During recent model building activities, students have connected to each other across languages.
I want to create stations for students to make models and deconstruct objects to further their engagement.
Students learn how science works and study engineering, physics, astronomy, chemistry and environmental science in English and their home language, then show their understanding through investigations, model making and art. The confidence they gain by being able to demonstrate their skills and understanding makes being vulnerable in English easier.
With the tools requested, students will explore engineering using biomimicry principles: build airplane models based on bird flight, design fluorescent safety signs after studying properties of light, test building stability after studying spheres, create mazes to study worm sensing and make musical instruments after studying sound. Consumable materials are being salvaged from products that would otherwise be thrown away.
