My students need to practice language. Not only Spanish but English as well. Through educational games, students learn and practice in a fun cooperative way. My wish is for my students to be fully biliterate!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is located in a low social economic area and the majority of our students are on free or reduced lunch. When they begin school in Kindergarten they come in with limited language and life experiences as well as a limited knowledge of different professions and careers. This is particularly true of my English learners.
Despite all of these limitations they begin their years in school with enthusiasm and a hunger to learn.
They are creative and imaginative and love hands-on projects that engage and challenge them.
I would like to provide my students with materials that will continue to encourage their love of learning and discovery. I want my students to feel that despite obstacles and hardships in their life, they have a safe, nurturing and challenging environment in which to learn.
My Project
My students often begin their years in school with a limited vocabulary. My first graders are Spanish dominant students but often even that language is not well developed.
By using educational games, such as flashcards, spelling puzzles and reading rods during small group or center time the students can practice manipulating language and making words.
These are skills that they are weak in or lack. Through these games, my students can practice using language in a fun and cooperative way. I would love for my students to have many opportunities to practice language.
I want my students to come to school each and every day looking forward to what we are going to learn and practice. I believe that these fun and hands on materials will help my bilingual students to become bi-literate. Language is key!
