This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are predominantly language learners or students with minor disabilities who struggle to keep up with the rigors of their peers. The students are goal-driven academically and seem to fall short on their data due to no fault of their own. After state testing this year, there have been evident gaps in our teaching methods for our language-learning populations, which keeps them from rising to their fullest potential.
My goal for these students is to make the room come alive, where learning will not only be engaging but will enhance their overall knowledge of the content.
We need word walls that are not pre-made but are made by the students, in real-time, with the content that is most important to their learning. The cardstock will help with this as students will be using it to make a graffiti-type art word wall for their content. We need more exposure to talking and writing in the class, to solidify vocabulary and learning processes. I want to make learning mats where students each have a job in the learning. The colored pens will help to hold each student accountable for their job. Each student will have a different color and will respond to the prompts given by writing, drawing, modeling, and explaining in detail their thoughts, confusions, and celebrations on content questions. The privacy boards will be available for students to add graphic organizers, vocabulary, and different visuals, and use while working at their desks on tests, classroom assignments, and group work. This will be just another tool for them. The playdough and popsicle sticks will be used for project-based learning of fractions, area, and volume. These opportunities are exactly what my students need to rise to their peers academically.
