My Students
My students are critically engaged readers who love getting immersed in the world of books. In my school, students read at least a novel a week and are able to choose books that interest them. Students develop their love of reading while also gaining college-ready close reading skills.
My students are creative, compassionate learners with a thirst for understanding the world around them.
Our school is a small, supportive learning community striving to educate the whole child-we prepare students for colleges while also supporting the emotional and social health of all of our students.
My Project
Every day in English classrooms, we use language to speak, write, read, and listen. Even though we might not think about it very often, this language is not politically neutral. Instead, all words come with connotations and index positions to which we may or may not be aware.
The teaching of English requires a rigorous study of these relationships between language and power so that we can set up our classrooms to be spaces where our language empowers students as intellectuals.
For this project, I am seeking books that will help me to study language and power broadly so that I can improve my methods of teaching and using language in the classroom. I have chosen books like "Discourse Analysis and the Study of Classroom Language" and "Raciolinguistics" to help me do this work.
