I am a language instruction education program (LIEP) teacher at multiple Title I elementary schools in Richmond, Virginia. As a LIEP teacher, I work directly with multilingual students who are learning English.
The aim of the project is to create a more welcoming and accessible environment for multilingual families, who are an important and growing population in our school community.
This year, I want to improve language access for multilingual families upon entering the school building. If this project receives funding, the language justice coordinator for our school district will help me to program the iPads with translation and interpretation services that can be used with ease in the front office. This project will directly impact students as we bridge the gap between home and school.
These iPads will enable multilingual families and staff members to communicate more effectively, which will support the academic and social-emotional needs of students. This is an important step for our school to take to make our community more equitable and inclusive, as we build trusting relationships with all of our families.
