My students need sensory materials like light filters, chew bracelets, and weighted vests in order to stay focused, disengage stress/anxiety, and calm down when overwhelmed.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
All of our students have Autism Spectrum Disorder and are in our school's self-contained Community and Education Support classroom. What I like to tell everyone is don't think of it as a disability, but rather as a different way of interacting with our world. All of our students have their unique gifts and talents and as such, require specific materials and supports to engage and interact with their educational work. Our students love coming to school and we work toward keeping that excitement alive. Our students come from all over Washington D.C. and we work hard to keep them excited and engaged in their learning and development.
My Project
Our students are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Due to this, our students require some extra assistance in order to stay engaged and handle emotional regulation. These materials will assist our students in becoming more independent in the classroom and foster more self-regulation throughout the day. As teachers, we try the best we can in order to provide the materials necessary for our students to be successful, both academically and socio-emotionally. In order to do this for our exceptional learners, we need more sensory materials that are not as easily created on our own. Weighted wear like the vests and sash, tactile materials such as the sand and fuzzies, and oral motor items will assist our students even more than we can inherently provide as educators.
