Landing Pad for Monarch Butterflies

My Project

This Earth Day my students decided we wanted to beautify our school by helping the dwindling monarch butterfly population. We researched the flight path, life cycle, host plants and pollinator plants to help us design our own butterfly garden and then planted it. Our goal with our garden was to help the butterfly population and give them a resting spot along their migration, as well as a place to lay eggs and start their families.

What we need to do now is maintain and help grow our butterfly garden.

Students will learn responsibility for keeping a plant alive as well as keeping invasive weeds out. They need watering cans since we don't have direct water access to the garden and the garden tools to add and remove plants as their life span comes to an end. In addition, we need to store all of our supplies near the garden. The cushion will provide a second use for the storage box--a bench for outdoor nature observation!
