My first graders would learn so much from a field trip to the Chicago Children's Museum! I teach at Oglesby Elementary in a low income community. Most of my 31 children have never left their neighborhood. Our school is lacking in many resources. We have no art, music, science or computer lab, or even recess. In the classroom I do all I can to make learning come to life, but I can only do so much with limited resources. Children learn best by doing. The Children's Museum provides so many ways for children to explore and discover in the areas of science, social studies, art, and physical education. I believe this trip could open many doors of curiosity and get my first graders excited about learning. In the Inventing Lab students will use gadgets and gizmos to invent their own creations. They will get to discover bones in an authentic excavation pit at the Dinosaur Expedition. In Water Ways students will work with pulleys, pumps, and wheels to demonstrate how we manipulate the power of water. Art and technology come to life in the Big Backyard. Imaginations will sore in Kids on the Fly, an aviation themed playground. Physical and mental challenges await at the Climbing Schooner, 3 floors of ropes and tubes. I believe the experiences from this field trip will make a huge impact on the lives of my students. Science and social studies will be learned in a whole new way. Curiosity will be sparked and a love of learning ignited!
