This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Hello, I am a first grade general education, TESOL-endorsed teacher who teaches a diverse group of students. I usually have around 20 to 24 students throughout the school year.

Some of my students start the school year speaking only their home language with no English language whatsoever.

They speak several different languages including Spanish, Kirundi, and Swahili. My students learn to speak English by learning phonics, visuals, and hand movements (sign language) that I have incorporated in my class.

One of my goals is to inspire my students to love learning. I also want to celebrate their language and culture. I have developed several strategies to encourage and help my students learn English through the visuals. I use a lot of pictures and universal print around our class to encourage learning. I believe that I can inspire a passion for languages by using a lot of visuals.

My Project

I use visuals, pictures and hands-on learning in my classroom. I use these strategies because they help me communicate effectively with my students who speak different languages. Students learn to communicate with me and their classmates through visuals, pictures and hands-on activities. After so many years of using the same pictures and posters, they have become old and tattered. With a new laminator, I will be able to make and repair pictures for my students.

I believe and I feel that I can inspire a passion for languages by using visuals such as pictures and hands-on leaning activities.

One of my goals is to inspire my students to love learning, but I also want to celebrate their language and culture.
