Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come excited to learn in two languages, as part of our Spanish Immersion Program that was adopted more than twelve years ago to meet the need of our cultural and linguistic diversity in our district. Seven years ago, parents got organized and successfully implemented uniforms at our school. This has helped our students to stay focused on learning, and it has provided a positive learning environment.

I am enriched and blessed by my students' diverse cultural, linguistic, and economic background.

More than 85% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. All of my kindergarten students get an amazing and unique opportunity to start learning in English and Spanish from K to 12. Close to 25% of my students' first language is English, and 50% of my students' first language is Spanish, and 25% speak another language. They share the journey to be able to graduate from high school bicultural, bilingual, and bi-literate; it all begins in my kindergarten classroom.

My Project

Our distance learning is coming back in the fall as a hybrid model. Students are expected to be at school two days a week and continue with distance learning the other three days of the week. This model will help keep students learning and staying safe by having smaller number of students in the classroom. Most of my students do not have the resources that they need to successfully participate in distance learning.

Many things will look different in the fall and as I prepare to welcome our new kindergarten class, and I want to support their learning as well as keeping them safe.

By having some of the students activities laminated and personalized, I can differentiate instruction for my students at school and at home. In kindergarten, in the fall we will focus on name writing, letter sounds and names as well as number sense. By having several activities that required repetition laminated for each child, it will allow students to use dry erase markers and wipe clean at school, and they could also be able to take it home for distance learning for additional practice.

The velcro dot will provide options for students to use on the laminated sheets. The activities will include matching numbers and quantities, upper and lower case letters and many other learning activities. This classroom laminator will allow me to laminate just the right activities for students to do at school and take home. My goal is for children to not have to share their activities and to be able to keep them at home when they have mastered the skill. This project will help my students stay safe while learning at school and at home.
