My students need a binding machine so that we can make adaptive books to enjoy reading the classics.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
It might first appear that my kindergarten and first grade students have all odds stacked against them. However, no one should judge a book by its cover. The majority of my students are given many labels (at-risk, special education, second language learners, Title I students, etc.) but what really defines them is their positive attitude, curious spirit and work ethic.
Every day my students fight the stereotypes that others use to define them and then succeed despite any hardships they do face.
My Project
I adapt every book and text book that the general education students use to make the material accessible to my special education students. This requires rewriting the books text with visual cues and attaching it to the original text. Then I unbind the book and laminating it to make it last longer. Next, I can velcro on key vocabulary words, characters or major event cards on the pages to help engage students and aid in retention. Lastly, I rebind the book to give the students practice turning pages and reading along with the teacher.
Currently, I am using a binding machine from the 1960s.
The machine is hardly sharp enough to whole punch two pages at a time. However, the biggest issue is when the book is bound and the student turn the pages! The old binding machine does not provide a 360 degree binding option. This often leads to the pages falling out of books and constant rebinding of books (as well as lost pages).
