Imagine a class of learners navigating mathematics through a variety of methods. Our class is in a low income school district on the southeast side of Columbus. The majority of the students are on free and reduced lunch and have limited access to educational resources. Students come from a variety of ethnicities. The students are hard working and showing gains using a new math program. However, a majority of the students are below grade level in their math abilities and are in need of intervention.
In our math classroom this quarter, I want to excite my learners.
Algebraic equations seem to be met with sleepy eyes. Maybe it is just that time of the year or the snowy weather cold front in Ohio is making everyone drowsy. Either way I want to find a way to spice up the math classroom.
My Project
Having a laminator and pouches with card stock will enhance my math classroom by allowing me to create vocabulary card sets, math games and posters. These are items that I will be able to use over and over for years to come. Many of the ideas I see on Pinterest utilize these classroom tools. Students are able to write on cards and worksheets when they are laminated with dry erase markers. Then they can be wiped off and used again. The Sharpies will be used to write on the cards before they are laminated.
Laminated vocabulary cards are able to hold up from middle school usage much better than worksheets on computer paper.
We will use the vocabulary cards to play Headbands and in partner work to enhance math vocabulary knowledge. Posters laminated on colorful cardstock will enhance the classroom atmosphere. Visual displays of math standards and key concepts give students constant reminders. The tools I am requesting will make the classroom more educational for years.
