Ladybugs, Butterflies And Praying Mantises, Oh My!
My students need hands-on experiences in science with insect growing opportunities, and Scholastic magazines about the "real world" reinforce many of those science concepts while helping them read and understand their world.
I am lucky to work in a very diverse, elementary school! We are in the center of a college town and are able to not only teach the children in the local community. We are also able to support the diverse cultural population who come to take advantage of our great university.
In my classroom, which is usually about twenty-five students each year, I am often fortunate enough to work with students from four or five different countries, and a range of students with some physical handicaps.
This diversity is an amazing learning experience for not only the children but the teachers as well.
My Project
I have found that the scholastic magazines have a great impact with all the children! The magazines are engaging and colorful and are always fun for the kids.
The growing labs that include the ladybugs, butterflies and praying mantises are so wonderful for the children!
They love watching the life cycles of these things and come in every morning checking on them. We also read about them and they always end up writing and drawing about them in their journals.
While all the children benefit from them, it's also wonderful for the kids to take the magazines home and share them with their families. It's a nice school to home connection!
