Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are female athletes learning to play basketball. We are part of an urban school system that does not offer youth sports at the elementary level and there are very few community based sports opportunities available for girls. Middle school is often the first time they have the opportunity to be a member of an organized sports team.

These girls work hard, keep up with their work in class and are learning to be a team.

They are learning to respect both themselves and their opponents as well as learning what it means to be a good teammate.

Despite not having enough equipment, often having the wrong footwear for playing and lacking playing experience, our girls have been beating the odds and achieving success on the court. They need extra support to allow them to focus more on the playing and less on worrying about having the supplies they need.

My Project

This project will help my girls because they don't have anywhere to keep their clothes, shoes and other basketball necessities. They need a bag to carry their things in as they travel to and from school and to and from games.

They often carry around their extra clothing resulting in things getting left behind or lost.

This project will give them somewhere safe to keep all of their belongings in one easy to carry location.

This will reduce the amount of time we spend worrying about making sure they have their belongings allowing us to spend more time focusing on their playing and improving their skills.
