My Students
My school is a public school serving Chicago's West Side community. Our school is designed to empower youth to thrive in college and careers, and we achieve this by surrounding them with an army of caring adults, high expectations, and endless love. All of our students are wonderful, and our student-athletes are a special breed, meeting all of the rigorous requirements of our school, and also managing their time well enough to add practices and games to their schedules.
What our students lack is a consistent supply of resources, especially for extracurricular activities.
Each year, the coaches at my school must vie for funding for basic needs, and our athletic director must manage a minuscule budget. Our district prioritizes academics, the trade-off being that many of our students miss out on access to building very necessary soft skills.
At our school, we aim to support our students' right to have options available to them upon graduating from high school. That may be a trade school, a two-year college, or a traditional four-year college. Your donation will help ensure more girls have access to all of the above, as a result of all the benefits that come from student athletics.
My Project
Put simply, girls' sports do not get the support they require. While funding may be equal, it is still more difficult to recruit girls into sports, more difficult to fill the stands on game day, and more challenging to convince girls to push through the natural adversity present in youth athletics and stay committed to their sport. Having access to more and better resources would aid our female athletes in their performance, and ultimately the value of their experience as runners on my school's track team.
Your donation will provide our Lady Cheetah runners with more gear, materials, and equipment to train at a high level.
More than just results, these items will improve the athletic experience for a number of female student-athletes. As a former high school student-athlete, myself, I am fully aware of how my experiences in athletics prepared me to be a Soldier, an Educator, and a resilient human being, in general.
