My Students

If you are reading this, you are probably someone who loves books and wants to share that love with children. Reading opens doors to worlds that children didn't even know existed. Reading aloud is a verified way to entice children into wanting to, and being able to, open those doors for themselves.

We are a Title 1 School.

93% of our students are on Free and Reduced Lunch. We just moved up from an F, and one of the lowest scoring elementary schools in the state, to a D school. Many of our students are reluctant readers, often because they have not been exposed to the incredible diversity of books available or because they are unable to read on grade level so books that interest them are beyond their reading abilities. Frustration sets in and students give up. Behavior issues crop up and learning suffers.

My Project

By using a Ladibug Document Camera, I can read aloud from 1 book, and the Ladibug projects the text or pictures from the book onto a screen so an entire class can read from 1 book. This means that instead of having a class set of only a few titles, due to the expense, we can share any book in the Library as an entire class! We can use wordless pictures books with younger children to help them learn plot and sequence and the importance of details in illustrations. We can read all of the Sunshine State Young Reader Award Books (15 titles) throughout the year and if we start one that does not catch the class interest, we have not wasted money on buying 25 copies of a book that most of our students don't enjoy. Just pick up another title, stick it under the Ladibug, try again! Students who are good readers read along. Classmates struggling with reading are exposed to the text, themes and vocabulary without being embarrassed. Frustration is replaced by the motivation to become a reader.

Few of our students are read to at home.

Few have books in their home. At our book fairs, few are able to buy books, although most express the desire to have a book of their own. Being read aloud to while having the opportunity to follow along, if able, is a powerful tool for increasing reading ability and the love of reading. The Ladibug Document Camera makes this a possiblity for any book in our school library. It is a simple, inexpensive and highly effective tool for raising lifelong readers.
