My students are often reluctant readers and come from homes where reading is not an everyday activity. They need many types of motivation to become interested in books and reading so they will read and become fluent and grade level readers, as well as book lovers. Often times, that "hook" comes from watching a movie, a format they are familiar with and enjoy. Many picture books have been made into excellent videos, as well as many chapter books for older readers. We often watch a short video and then read the book or an excerpt from the book to catch the interest of the students and also to practice compare and contrast skills, which are part of the core standards, in an engaging way.
