This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are in one of the first technical theater / play production classes that this high school has had in many years. Due to funding we have not been able to put on a full play and we are hoping to change that this year.

Our students come from low income and lower-middle class families, primarily.

The school is a very large public school, that in it's heyday, was attended by many important people, but over the years has been hit hard by budget cuts and increased class sizes. The students are interested in learning, and I am hoping to make the class as hands on and interactive as possible.

My Project

As the play production class, it is our job to create the sets, adjust the lights and set up everything needed behind the scenes for the school productions. One of the fundamental tools used to do this work is a ladder, as it is very difficult to reach the tops of pieces of scenery when we paint and set them up without one.

As seemingly insignificant as it is, with a ladder, our students will better be able to realize their scenic ideas, as we won't be restricted by being able to reach things by standing on boxes or short stepladders.

The proper tools allow for better learning, and just as you need books and pens and paper to teach academic classes, ladders, (along with wood and tools) are the fundamentals in technical theater.
