This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
While many of my students have never left their city, their minds are eager to learn about the wider world around them. We accomplish this by reading during any spare moment, but our current library is limited.
My students are a diverse group of passionate fourth grade learners in an underprivileged urban Connecticut school.
They fight their outside circumstances every day in order to grow academically and emotionally in our classroom community. They have dreams of college and success, and they know every moment is an opportunity to learn in order to get there. Respect and responsibility are driving themes in all of our actions. These kids are on a path to becoming strong global citizens and have a strong desire to learn more about their world.
My Project
Every day, we have reading centers which involve using the library as well as a block of independent reading time. Students also borrow books from the library for home reading. These new books will expand their selections drastically and will make this time more useful and rewarding for all students. These books will be a highlight of our classroom collection. They will learn to choose books directly on their levels and matching their interests.
We use our classroom library every day, multiple times a day.
Students are always asking me to visit the library so they can take a book home for more personal reading, as their own stock of books is minimal and way below grade level. My classroom library currently does not have much to offer them. These books will boost their selection and encourage them to keep reading both in the classroom and at home.
