Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Working in a Title 1 school as a first-year teacher has been eye opening in many ways. First, I learned that students have a desire to learn and can be passionate about science when it is hands. Student engagement and performance has been much better in units where we got to perform dissections, labs and collaborate work. Second, I learned how to expand lessons to incorporate real world examples and activities. Lastly, I learned how much money teachers can spend when planning for these labs.

My desire is to continue creating an immersive experience for my students via more relevant labs.

The portable balance, chalk and seashells will help demonstrate how ocean acidification can break down substances that are composed of calcium carbonate. The chalk and seashells (which are made of calcium carbonate) will be submerged in vinegar (which simulates an acidic ocean) and students will get to measure how it is breaking down over time.

Additionally, my class has the opportunity to collect water samples at a nearby bayou where we get to analyze microbes present in the water. The slides and slide covers will allow my students to display their samples and observe them under a microscope. These labs are not only to make learning fun, but I know these analytical skills will transfer to whatever field they go into, so they become well rounded individuals.
